Push Button Start
Dreaming of possible things for my wishlist of modifications for my 08 Sti and came across the push button starter used in JDM and UK Sti's.
Has anybody fitted one to an Aussie WRX or Sti? I would imagine that there will be proximity sensors as well as different drivers door handle to be fitted as well as the cool start button of course. Any ideas? |

Don't bother man. The key has to go in the ignition anyway to turn the electrics on afaik which would defeat the 'cool' factor in it.

At a guess, insurance companies would LOVE you to have this mod. Car gets broken into and stolen, they don't have to pay you out.
Unless you enable the keypad, which basically arse-fucks the idea of a quick start anyway...

You guys don't get it do you....
The car has a transponder which senses the code on the alarm in your pocket and allows the car to unlock and start whilst you are in the immediate vicinity. You don't need to use the key at all. Just have it on you. Well, not the key but the alarm module. How do you think most other high end cars do it? They are just as secure as a traditional key and alarm. |

All of those cars have electronic steering locks.... Unlike your Subaru. Your Subaru key has a transponder too - in the head of the key, no key code = no start & it's hard wired into the ecu so good luck in defeating that. comfort access which unlocks the doors as you approach is probably all you could achieve as a diy project.

I hear what you are saying and yes it would be a PITA to have to remove the stock ignition lock but when you look at either the JDM Spec C or the UK models at least they have a blank over the key and also have the push button insert above where the dash illumination roller is. The new push button start replaces the dash light roller as well as it is integrated into the same moulding.
Obviously Subaru has already solved all of the fitment and security issues. It is just a matter of determining how many things and at what cost to make the conversion. I doubt I will do it but if the parts could be obtained for under $500 I would jump at it. |
