Rear Diff Issues
Hey guys, I just got a quote of about 3-500 to get the rear diffs reshimmed on my 02 STI as its making a clunking noise. Would getting a new diff make more sense than shimming? I believe they are roughly the same price.

You'd be spending that on labour installing a new diff, as it will probably need to be shimmed up anyway.

I have a good condition R180 diff to suit your car if you want it. 3.9 ratio with a Plated 2 way LSD. A Plated LSD my make more noise than the usually silent suretrac LSDs but at least its for good reason.

and just to clarify, if you replace the complete diff (housing and all) there is no need for reshimming, you only need to do that if you change the crown wheel & pinion

Don't let me get in the way of an awesome sale. I'm just in fact-finding mode to see what my options are. Can Mister Two and you PM me on how much you are chasing for the respective diffs?
How's the lifespan of a reshimmed diff (assuming normal driving, no hard trashing or launches)? |

I get the rear clunking sound in most cases unless I take my time when engaging gears. I brought it to a couple of places and some mentioned it might be the struts, bushings or the diff itself. If I release the throttle suddenly while accelerating, I get that sound too.

If this is the problem you are having, don't waste money re-shimming the diff.
Go see someone like Doug @ STechnic to diagnose it properly. You'll probably find it's just the rear diff bushes have perished.

I only seem to get the clunk when taking off but not so much changing gears. I had thought it might have been suspension related noise too. Haven't had it checked by anyone yet. I'll try the sudden lift off on the throttle and see if there is any noise. Cheers. |
