Wouldn't recommend that. Not in a million years.
Take it to a Subaru specialist workshop (and that doesn't include Subaru dealers). Have a read of this thread: http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/mechanicals/6775-perth-workshops.html
Ring the one's in your area (which in reality, isn't any of them), and go from there.
I'd drive 50km's to a competent mechanic over taking my car to Subaru.

God forbid factory trained technician's, some with over 20 years experience, would know what they're talking about. I'm pretty sure they might have a clue, and for the record, I would use Castrol Syntrax over Redline any day of the week. Some 5 speeds have an issue with the nut on the end of the main shaft coming loose also.

It's not the long timers most people get worried about - It's the 1yr in apprentices who think they know everything. I guess people have heard 'stories' (true or not) and just decide not to take the risk (and the expense)

Personally I buy all the components I want installed and then take it to someone I trust. Too much red tape/excessive pricing at Subaru Re: Exhaust, Custom tunes, Non-standard bits and pieces - Maybe this Ozzy Park do coming up is trying to break that down a bit??

I've heard good things about Syntrax - But after putting Lightweight Shockproof in mine, it feels so much better. Hard to believe Syntrax could improve upon it.

Maybe i'll try it in a 6 speed once i put one in.

I hear where you're coming from. However, I challenge you to find even a handful of reports of good experiences with dealer workshops in this community.
I'll save you the hassle, and tell you now that they don't exist.

The problem with dealers, is it is like dealing with a corporation sometimes and not personal.

i.e. Pay $1000 to change some fluids in your car and I ask for the filter or a picture of the filter so I can inspect it and understand how the old fluid went. Pay bill ask for filter or picture and 'oh sorry, we forgot and its binned'. Take it to a smaller performance shop and they just seem to have a bit more attention to give.

Sometimes, that isn't the case too! I know I've had some great assistance from Subaru dealers in the past and shit advice from performance shops.

I see what you are saying as well! You have proved your knowledge on these boards already! If we where garanteed to get you working on our cars things would be different i guess. But we cant be garanteed that. Also the pricing compared to other places is much more at subaru.

While there is no doubt there are good subaru mechanics at the dealerships i dont think there is any denying that the gearbox would be better off at one of the aftermarket stores. They see busted gearboxes everyday and wont be as harsh on your wallet
