did you hold the revs up at about 2500rpm, because if you just let the car idle, it will never bleed up, unless you fill the cooling system very slowy.

start the car up, leave the cap off and bring up the revs, and keep them up. when it starts to get hot put the cap back on and bring the revs up higher, say 4500rpm untill the thermostat opens (bottom hose hot)

then once that is all done, let it cool down and top up the coolant to full again.

My mechanic mate came over after work today, He brought over that burping tool, and we got out all the air. It was then idling fine at the correct temp for over 10 min. I then drove it down the road thinking all was well, and then the temp started rising again, so I headed straight home..

My mate said the thermostat has probably gone. Will pick up a new one tomorrow and see how we go.

Supposed to squeeze with cap on, then take off & top up then repeat, it's worked for me several times.

So i was just testing my thermostat before i bought a new one. It was on the stove getting quite hot, and it had not opened at all and i thought it was dead. Then all off a sudden it just sprung wide open, It now seems to be working fine, opening and closing correctly when adding and removing heat.

Do you think that it was ceased shut, and is now working correctly? Should i replace the thermostat with a new one or put the old one that seems to now be working correctly back in?

I would just replace it with a new one. Find the one that has a fail-safe (if it fails, it will fail in the open position). They shouldn't be that expensive

No definitely not, risk it failing again.

Sensing sarcasm. Put in a new thermostat and all is well. Was actually quite scary driving my car, its a tad quicker than the pos 4wd i have been driving around in the last month...

if you have gone to the trouble of removing the thermostat you might as well replace it
