Check the final drive by looking up the transmission code. It is on a white sticker on the gearbox bell housing.

If there is no sticker. And hopefully no oil in the box...

turn the box upside down and remove the oil drain plug. shine a torch in there. You should be able to see the front crown wheel. Mark a tooth with a paint marker. And start turning the front shaft stubs and count the teeth.

39 teeth = 3.9 box (but you'll also need to check if it has a step down or not in the transfer case)
37 teeth = 4.11 box

40 teeth = 4.44 box

all GC8 STI's are 4.44 rear ratio not 4.11

GC8 WRX uses 1.1 drop gears in the transfer case & uses 3.9:1 front diff & 3.54:1 rear.

Only V3/4/5/6 STI are 4.44

V1/2 STI are 4.11

and V1/2 STI-RA is 3.9

Sorry I was only talking Aus cars as they were implied.

Ra's had 4.11 or 4.44 too.
