Exclamation MY01 Overheating?

Edit Again: Mechanic has checked it out. No leaks, no damage, reckons it was probably just airlocked (bled and replaced coolant in radiator/reservoir tanks).
Ran for 15 minutes, kept normal temperature, fans cut in, was fine idling, no black smoke from exhaust etc.

Looks like I dodged a bullet *wipes brow*
Must remember to start checking reservoir coolant levels each time I re-fuel now.

Edit: Car cooled down enough for me to open the radiator cap. Bone fucking dry. Not a single drop of coolant in my engine.

So I have a 2000 MY01 WRX right.

I had the timing belt replaced a week or 2 ago along with the rest of the kit that goes with it so they had to have done a coolant change.

Yesterday I was driving and I noticed that my temperature gauge was chilling above red line, was a stifling hot day yesterday and I didn't really think much of it.
Same thing happened today, within minutes of starting the car and driving halfway through the block, temperature gauge hit the ceiling.

Now I'm not very car savvy but I know that this is very wrong and shouldn't be happening especially if it has new coolant. (I haven't checked the radiator tank yet but the reserve tank was completely empty. Could it be that the mechanic put the wrong coolant in and it's corroded or something? Did he just not put enough in? He fuck the radiator?

I'm want to go buy some Subaru OEM coolant tomorrow but not really sure where to buy it, any stores you can suggest?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
Timmy

Did the kit include a water pump?

Make sure you have not driven the car for more than couple of seconds when temp gauge was in the red zone.

The vehicle must be turned off if the needle rises above normal operating temperature, otherwise there could be damage to the heads or headgaskets, although it is rare, it is not uncommon.

Also bring back to the workshop and ask them to do a pressure test on the cooling system. Make sure that there is water is the cooling system first. Do not open the reservoir filler cap when hot. Fill it up when the car has cooled down.

If unsure, get someone knowledgeable to look at it.

GL.

If the work has only just been done, return to said mechanic for diagnosis just in case he fucked up.

your temp should NEVER reach the red end of the scale and if it did and if you continued to drive the car YOU may have hurt it.

**edit** beaten by '-' this much.

Yeah the kit included a water pump. I checked the reservoir tank when it was cool enough to, but the radiator cap was still too hot, I'll check that out later when it too cools down. I hope I haven't damaged anything, that's the last thing I need right now.

Thanks for the advice.

It didn't just reach the red end, it went past it.

I would say so, at least head gaskets/ head repairs.

Initially, it may have been an air lock in the cooling system from not being bled properly.
But if you kept driving with the needle in the red, you have most likely damaged the engine.
It doesn't matter how hot the ambient temperature is, the needle should never go above half on a Subaru.
Call your mechanic, tell him/her whats happened.
If he is at fault, he will have to fix it at his expense. But only if its his fault.
