My 07 wrx is only making 220hp with a dual high flow catted 3" TBE.

basically all you have done by screwing the actuator in is pre-loaded the actuator spring abit more. Which means that it has to be closer to the pre-determined boost pressure you car is tuned to before it will open. By winding it out it free's the spring which means it will have less pressure so less boost pressure will be able to make it move slightly but not all the way open. Causing the wastegate flap inside your turbo to open then close alittle bit rapidly until enough pressure is built to hold the spring down and the wastegate fully open.

When i tightened mine before i had a tune, only 3 FULL turns i could feel the car boost spiking. so i wound it back and havent played with it since, even after the tune. I want to install a boost gauge first.

Installed a boost gauge and tightened my actuator arm and the noise isnt as bad. Another thIng i noticed is the noise only happens when the car is in vacuum, once i get to -2 the noise is gone everytime. It doesnt matter how much i try to re-create it, unless im in vacuum i cant.

Ok been thinking. how can this noise be wastegate flutter if the car isnt even producing any sort of boost yet? their is no pressure on the actuator lines, the only pressure is coming from the exhaust.

Is it possible im experiencing compressure surge?

I found this written by Mister Two on this forum "Put Simply, compressor surge happens when the turbo is pushing more air than the engine can ingest. Usually happens at low RPM when the turbo is spooling up. Its spools up too quickly and because of the low RPM, the engine cant ingest all the air so you get air moving back into the compressor housing making that sound." Is it possible that im experiencing compression surge.

Ok was mulling it over in my head all day. If it is the wastegate flapping. Then that means their is pressure getting to the actuator. At a long shot i pulled of my stock boost solenoid and blew into either of the ports. No matter which port i blew into alit bit would escape out of the other one. Plugged green plugs together under dash, turned car on but did not start it and whilst the solenoid was cycling i blew shit loads of contact cleaner into the ports until they sprayed out the other port. Turned car off, disconnect solenoid and tapped it on the bench to get the excess cleaner out, and a small grit of of something came out . Now when i blow into the ports i cant blow through so it sealing properly now. I have re-installed it but wont be able to go for a drive till tomorrow. Heres hoping this fixes the problem... Sorry for all the comments, i find it helps when i document stuff lol.

nice find and good work for figuring out where the root cause should have been

I havent driven the car yet to see if it recitified the noise yet. Fingers crossed.

So it half fixed the problem. Now instead of doing it in all gears, its only doing it in 4th and 5th when the engine is loaded (under 3k RPM). But it isnt doing it for as long now. Im going to give it another clean, but i think the solenoid might be on its way out. I have a grimmspeed 3port but i cant justify the remapping cost just for a solenoid just yet.

Didn't you just buy a new bike, going to buy a house and also looking at building a rally car? Are you mates with Sonic?
