the fact that the oem ones are smaller so they are further away from the headers is the no brainer part for me

Yep Z495 for a Bug eye. I now don't know why you would have changed it from a Z495 to a Z436 to start with?

I think i have only ever seen 1 Ryco filter leak in my career!

Because I was searching online and a few sources said to fit the Ryco Z436!!? as it was the same size as the Geniune Subaru Filter which it is.

Those Z495 are a fair bit bigger than the Geniune Subaru and Z436 and sit a lot closer to the exhaust

Heres just one source I used in gathering info on what ryco filter to use on the Subaru

Either the thread on the oil filter housing is stripped or like I said the oil cooler o ring is leaking. Maybe be something worse like a cam or crank seal leaking down the timing cover and Onto the oil filter

I looked again at that and its definitely not leaking from higher than the Oil Filter itself, all that area is still dry as . The Thread on the housing looked fine to me when I checked it before installing the Subaru Filter..
