That's a bit unfair to Conti's I reckon. Maybe they do have some that are made in China (I haven't seen one), but Continental are a top class German tyre manufacturer, with a good reputation for grip in the wet, etc.
At the same time the ones mentioned are probably more a touring tyre and may not be suitable for the WRX (owner's decision), but they are generally a high quality tyre.
IMO, the reason they are quite cheap now is because they are getting distributed by Bob Janes, whereas a few years ago there was only a few exclusive dealers in Aust.
I had them as O.E. on my wifes 2004 Renault, but firstly replaced them with Toyos because the Conti's were $250 per corner (for a shopping car!). Next time I was able to get them from BJ at less than $150 each, big difference. These ones are actually made in Portugal, but geez, the last Michelins I had were made in Thailand (and they were crap).

Cheers.

LOL! Continental AG is NOT Chinese! They employ 170,000 people globally and had $32,736.2 million EURO(!) in sales for 2012.

"July,2013: Continental recently received a whole raft of approvals from Audi in Ingolstadt. The summer tires from the ContiSportContact 5 series are approved for the Audi A3 as well as for the automaker’s flagship model, the A8. On top of this, Audi will in future be equipping its A6, A6 Allroad, A7 and RS 6 Quattro models with the ContiSportContact 5 P. In all, five tire sizes have been released for 19- to 21-inch rims. Audi will be fitting the Continental models ex-works, and the tires with the special “AO” (Audi Original Parts) mark can in future be ordered from Audi dealerships and via specialist tire trade outlets. Tires for Audi’s RS models are marked “R01”."

There's also a swath of BMW's using Conti's (Sport contact II's generally) as the OEM tyre (they have been since the 80's).

I service european cars for a living, and i have only ever seen some very base model bmw's come out with conti's, when they are optioned with steel wheels. most times we swap over the conti's to bridgestone run flats.

there is numerous durability concerns with continental tyres, and we often have them start to fall apart at half life where the tread literally separates from the tyre. we have similar problems with michilen tyres.

They both tend to wear out very quickly, get noisy and scalloped and perform poorly.

oh and most continental tyres are made in china.

Hmm Interesting, seeing as the E60 M5 & E63/64 M6 (285/35 rear and 255/40 ZR19's) along with the new F10 M5 & F12/13 M6 have Conti's as OEM fitment...Yep all must be base models on steel rims.

Even the factory BMW runflats on the E90's back in '05 when I was at AutoClassic were Continental SSR's.

FYI - Here are all the Continental Automotive Tyre factories and the plant codes that tell you which factory the tyre comes from:

CONTINENTAL AG GERMANY 3Q
CONTINENTAL AG GERMANY CM
CONTINENTAL AG WERK KORBACH GERMANY CP
CONTINENTAL AG WERK AACHEN GERMANY LM
CONTINENTAL AG WERK STOECKEN GERMANY CU
CONTINENTAL AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT GERMANY LF
CONTINENTAL DO BRASIL PRODUTOS AUTOMOTIVOS LTDA. BRAZIL 3S
CONTINENTAL DO BRASIL PRODUTOS AUTOMOTIVOS LTDA. BRAZIL 65
CONTINENTAL GISLAVED DAECK AB SWEDEN P1
CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE, A.C. GERMANY CT
CONTINENTAL MATADOR TIRES S.R.O. SLOVAKIA 6Y
CONTINENTAL SIME TYRE PJ SDN BERHAD MALAYSIA B2
CONTINENTAL SIME TYRES SDN BHD. DMIB BERHAD MALAYSIA 46
CONTINENTAL TYRE SA (PTY) LTD SOUTH AFRICA 1L
CONTINENTIAL AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS S.R.L. ROMANIA 6G

But where is China?

Right between Taiwan and India:

BRIDGESTONE TAIWAN CO., LTD. TAIWAN C8
BRIDGESTONE (SHENYANG) TIRE CO LTD CHINA DH
BRIDGESTONE (TIANJIN) TIRE CO., LTD. CHINA 1U
BRIDGESTONE ACC INDIA LTD. INDIA 4W

I prefer facts over hear-say.

Nothing against asian tyres - I have Bridgestone Turanza's on my E39

I have Conti Contact Sports as OE on my RS and I certainly rate them. And also have Conti's as OE on my Pathfinder...and they seem pretty good too.

Well if nothing else I've sparked a good debate on continental as a tyre maker. Fwiw I use continental tyres on my road bike and for bike tyres they have a really good reputation
