I've got a 2009 Impreza RX and at around 2100 - 2200 RPM there is a rattle which resonates from around the engine/gearbox area. It only happens in that rev range and only under light acceleration or deceleration. If I put the boot in I don't hear it. My gut feeling is it's a rattle coming from the exhaust somewhere, it's reaching some point of resonation and that's causing the rattle. I've crawled under the car and can't find anything loose with the exhaust. It doesn't seem to have any other impact, it's not very loud but I notice it and it's annoying. Any thoughts people? I'm wondering if it's a common problem?

i would try removing the exhaust shield and see if it goes away. Not sure if you will be able to replace it again but, do they have bolts or metal straps?

i seem to rememeber the foresters of similar vintage having a rattle that was narrowed down to the wastegate actuator, just needed a small adjustment, might be worth checking

or more commonly you've snapped a mount/bolt on one of your heatshields & thats causing it

Wastegate? Isn't that only part of a turbocharged unit?

Which heat shield is likely the culrpit?

mine had been doing this for ages.. about half its life with me. many mechanics just shrugged.. bridgestone found my heatshield broken.

Heat sheilds around the tubular headers that the NA motor uses,the insulation material has broken down allowing the outer shielding to reverberate .
Get some exhaust heat wrap and insert inbetween header and heat shielding.
