Default Breaking in an engine

Hey guys, girls

I know I should use the search function but I work away and just don't have the time. I just ordered the 2015 wrx sti and should pick it up in 4-6 weeks. I've heard mixed responses with the fitters at work. Half say drive it like I stole it and the other half say nurse it. This isn't my first wrx but it's definitely my first car from new.

Any feedback?

Much appreciated

Don't have time to search because you work away . . . there's some logic.

They are the two schools of thought, but I've seen a lot more issues with cars that have been belted during "run in". My opinion: nurse it to begin with, then towards the end of the "run in" period slowly start loading it up more and more.

Mike,

That's a massive generalisation. You have no idea where I work or what I do?

Nonetheless, thanks for the comments regarding my question.

I agree, mate - it was a generalisation. I was just pointing out that it would literally take you 15mins to do a thorough search on a topic that has been covered so many times.

Drive at full throttle but keep it under 4k for 500-1000km, it's under warranty too, if it's going to blow up it'll do it in less than 100,000km/3years

Give it full noise. Ideally you want to put it under some load though. I.e put some people in it and go up greenmount hill a few times. Doesnt need to be fast. Just work throguh some gears without keeping the revs steady.

The worst thing you can do in my opinion is sit on the freeway at 105kph in 6th gear. The engine isnt working at all.

This is how I did it.

1) Carefully drive out of the dealership on to the main road.
2) Chuck it in Sports Sharp and bash the limiter.
3) Smiles will follow.
