I have 500kms on the engine and so far so good. I haven't really been over 4000rpm as yet but it feels good. I am hoping to do an oil change this weekend and move onto synthetic oil. Will be using Castrol synthetic 5-40w.

The clutch is breaking in slowly. It it quite aggressive at times where I almost stall it and at others it seems more progressive. My guess is that this is part of the bedding in routine. The lightened flywheel means that when it does grab it can just about stall as there is less momentum to carry through.

Fuelling is a little rich at this stage but we are only on wastegate pressure which I think is about 10psi.

Have got nearly 800kms on the new engine now. The clutch is generally smooth in its engagement but every now and then it catches me not thinking and I have to quickly pop the clutch back in before I stall.

The rings must be seated now as idle vacuum is up to the 18/19 that I had on the factory engine.

Tuning is still progressing. Have done a couple of wide open 2nd gear pulls but the fuelling is still over rich up high. Boost is still down at 12 psi.

The good bit is that the turbo starts to wake up by 3000rpm and hits target around 3500rpm. Not bad for a 3076.

More tunes will come over the next week so maybe in another week I could be finished.

I will only be tuning on 98 at this stage and will probably have a 18 and 23psi map or something around these levels depending how the engine reacts.

Considering changing over to speed density.

I didn't think speed density was possible on the CANBUS ECU and flash/open source tunes?

Romraider can do either MAP or even hybrid MAP. That is maf on gentle and map on WOT etc.

My original engine was finally cracked open last night to check out the extent of the dreaded piston ringland failure.

The good news...apart from being glazed the bores look good and unmarked. The block will live again after receiving some improved internals.

The interesting parts...the crank bearings show serious signs of wear. Considering that the car has not been run low on oil or tracked during my ownership... The wear is quite surprising. Make up your own minds. Does this look like a sub 60k km engine?

And of course...the Pistons.

Thats fucked . The even wear on the bearing overlay you can see usually indicates oil starvation .
Id most likely say due to oil pump failure from faulty pressure relief valve. Ringlands are self explanatory.

Pull the pump off and see if the relief valve is seized.

Thanks for the chart on failure modes. I can only guess that the damage may have occurred during the first 30k kms of the cars life under the previous owner.

The new engine has a higher flow oil pump plus the killer b baffle and pickup. I also have the Knight racing modified crank which should also provide some improved oiling to the bearings.

All good in theory anyhow!!

Yours is an MY08 STI...correct? And the engine has been untouched since now? If so it looks like the old bearing problem that Subaru had with a lot of these engines when the MY08 first came out...

The engine had never been opened up. Just lots of bolt on changes. My car is one of the first MY08's delivered.

Did you have any more information on what the engine issues are/were? I thought that it was all piston related and transition from open to closed loop.
