My .02 cents for what it's worth: You're opening a block and building part(or more) of the engine, please do yourself a favour and get a live professional tune for the run in and the first power run for safety... ...then do what you want for the rest of the time via email. That's all I was trying to say there, but either way whatever you decide to do, if it works well I'll be happy for you anyway

No doubt it's a must to upgrade the oil pick up. Trust me because I've learnt this the hard way after telling the "professional" when my engine got built the first time that I wanted to put in a killerB pick up after reading horror stories. According to the advice given it is not necessary and one in a few thousand fail...That's coming from a builder that supposedly does this as a profession.
That cost me a engine in the end and I happened to be one of the "thousands". With the new engine after than it was necessary to upgrade to the killerB pick up. |

Just wondering/getting a bit more concerned... i've got the whole inspector gadget smokescreen on WoT and the oily residue on the bumper, given it's an '08 there's always the looming threat of RLF. It's always consumed a bit of oil, but hasn't changed too much in the couple years of owning
Is there a definitive diagnosis for cracked ringlands at all without cracking the engine open? i know of the compression leak tests, but have heard of these coming as false negatives before... Also, can any workshop do the tests?

Go to STechnic for a test, or to ASG for the test as well as the confirmation from the ecu stats/dyno behaviour, $250 for peace of mind is well worth it

Ringland anyone?
I may do a leakdown test to confirm but a possible cause of my failure may have been due to me giving the car a bit of a belting before adjusting the tune for the change of headers.
Logs have always been good but recently I had increased consumption of oil and a dip in power up very high and unable to tune afrs away from very rich at the same rev range. Graham is definitely very good and at the end of the day I choose to tune in this manner and I accept whatever consequences come of it. I may review this decision if I kill another engine.... No problems at all. I did a lot of searching trying to find a conclusive list of failure symptoms. I even looked at generic engines but still came to the conclusion that symptoms can vary. Leakdown test seems to be the only conclusive test.

Here is my story. When i first got mine, car didnt use much oil at all. As power increases it started using more. at first compression test, there was 4psi difference. After header installed, compression test had 7psi diff, leak down test showed 7% varience. After I put GT2871, compresstion test still showed 7psi diff. After I install HKS ssqv, the boost was holding at 1.5bar not backing down, after a day I notice smoke from breather.
If I get the car tuned after putting ssqv, the engine may last a bit longer tbh. Mine situation is similar to Brett's, no tuning after VE is altered..... Until the engine is removed, there wasnt any smoke from exhaust, no abnormal sound, just smoke from filler cap. Even after Mao took the engine out, there is only two hairline crack on piston 4 and rod bearing wear, ringland still intact, no scoring on the bore. That cracks made up 70 psi compression loss....... But yes, leak down test gives more accurate result.
