Hey maddog, thanx for the info as per phone & others as per this and the linked thread.
Looking at the pic on the linked thread, the afm is obviously a different type to the stock 99-00. Assuming the sensor area is the plastic covered metal plate on mine, I don't have a cotton tip small enough to reach the surface before being stopped by the plastic cover. I can force the cotton tip but wonder about damage. The whole thing looks like a sealed unit, as I would expect, therefore disassambly is not an option. Just spraying the metal plate without mechanical wiping of the sensor plate hasn't made a difference as yet, any other ideas? Perhaps it's $tuffed & time for a newie? The car's done 150k and I don't know if it's ever been replaced as yet Cheerz

Took the plunge and forced the cotton tip to clean the plate. Thought, what the hell, got nothin to lose now & if I stuff it up a new afm will fix the prob. Here's hoping.....

Sorry to harp on about this...
Had 2 attempts to clean it, the 2nd time was only a marginal improvement . So I sprung for a new one, at least the price has come further down to $191.05 . Kept the old one, pic as below... where exactly is the area to be cleaned?

The shiny metal part is one of the metal film sensors. I am not sure but I believe they have 2 thin film temp sensors, one facing upstream (visible) the other downstream, inside the plastic. A heater is in the middle for a ref temp. Difference between upstream and down stream sensor temps indicate mass airflow.
The problem I suspect is caused by vibration of the MAF sensor. They do not hold up very well. Best to cut your losses, you may as well cut the old one up for research.

Regents in Osbourne Park should have em at $190.
You don't need the whole housing just the AFM. It can be purchased seperately. Don't let a spare parts guy try and sell you whole thing. J
