I didnt realise so many people here were running Motec........................ But yes, cars will idle higher when cold. Then settle to its tuned idle value once warm. (Be that 7/8/900rpm or whatever).

This is for a Motec ECU.

Can't people remember manual chokes in cars?
Cold start, engine will rev harder. Revving it will open (or close, I forget ) the "choke" bringing revs down. Revs will drop when at operating temp. Hunting idle on a stock ECU is not normal and should be checked by your favourite Subaru workshop. Rev limiter is a value on your ecu (stock, motec, autronic, whatever) and does not necessarily line up with the red line on the tacho...

just a light "tap" on the gas pedal is all you need, reving a cold engine is not advisable,..mine starts at around 1700 a light tap on the pedal and it drops to 1000-900rpm...
