DON'T FORMAT b4 you throw another test vid card into it! If the card is all that's on the fritz then a straight swapout/driver unload/reinstall will fix all.

Maybe even jump into safe mode 1st & reinstall vid drivers...

Hopefully going to try a test card, right now I can't see much on the screen because of those lines. I'm on my iPhone now.

Might take it somewhere if I get time.

Boot into safe mode, unload your video drivers .. reboot, and see what happens.

If it lets you into Windows, re-install latest video card driver.

Possibly that the video card is indeed dead, which would potentially cause a BSOD and the wierd lines.

Try a diff video card before format.

How do you do that in safe mode and vista?
I can't find it. I thought it was under the advanced display settings. But i can't see anything to uninstall the driver

I go to

Control panel
Display settings
Advanced settings
Adaptor properties
Driver

Nothing helpful in there

Anything in Add/Remove? Don't run Vista but i suspect it would be Device Manager, Display, Right Click // Un-install.

Did that

It doesn't work and as soon as I log in it reinstalls the old driver automatically

So I guess the card is rooted then

THREAD HIJACK:

"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" BSOD started coming up on my dad's laptop this morning, I've tried running chkdsk /r through the windows recovery console, but it gets to about 30% and says "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems", any other suggestions? It's his work laptop, so I need to recover all the data before reformatting....

Take the drive out, put it in a caddy and copy data to another computer.
