Oh, well the drive itself is unbootable. Probably a few bad blocks on the drive within the boot sector or similar.

You need unscrew the case to get to the drive, plug it in a laptop HDD caddy which can then connect to your PC via USB. The HDD should then just appear as another drive in My Computer.

I guess you could pay a PC shop to do it and it would be no more than an hours labour.

Otherwise, I'm sure you someone on here could sort you out for a carton.

Was gonna take it to Spectrum Data in Tech Park, Bentley - it'll cost $660 through them, so maybe this option is worth looking at. Where can you buy laptop hdd caddy's?

well if its sata.... its universal... meaning that the sata on your desktop (if you have a sata chipset on your mobo) would be able to connect that laptop drive via sata....

however, with ide within the desktop and laptop interface are different ammount of pins so thats why you are forced to use a caddy.

You might wanna remove the drive before you start buyin and altering things.

Also a nice neat trick to getting them drive to work well is to put an ice pack on top of them whilst you are transferring files. (place the icepack in some sort of sealed bag so there is no water leaking onto the drive)

Why would you need to do this?

well known little trick, also sticking them in the freezer for a little while (well sealed of course). the bearings get flogged out and overheat, thats when the drive fails. by cooling them down you get a little bit of extra life out of them
