My old man has never had an apprentice stay with him to completion. they do a max of 3 years then hit up the bosses for their paperwork and more money. They then run away when dad expects them to be able to do the job they are getting paid to, and cant.

i think thats the big problem with the trades at the moment. they all want the money, without doing the effort.

My Missus is in the Navy, she is a qualified Submariner (one of the first the RAN had). Now is on a shore posting doing 7 hour days 5 days a week, she has just re-signed for 18 months, got a $60K bonus for doing so and is on bulk shpondoolas doing sweet fuck all.

It's a good career path and good pay.

I am currently out of work and if I could handle going away and getting moved around every 5 minutes whilst I am a pleb I would do it in a heartbeat.

My 2c, you get a trade, you always have something to fall back on, let alone if you have half a brain and move up the rungs to middle management or even uni after as I did. And if your a half decent tradesmen you will always be sought after, trust me I worked in an Engineering company for 10yrs as a Project Manager and the good tradies are worth their weight in gold.

i tried to get an apprenticeship every1 these days require you to do a pre-apprentice coarse at tafe for 6 months, which i cant do. i just started looking at reserves in the defence force, you can do a trade through them, which is good cause you dont have to move anywhere like you would if you were to join fulltime. I was looking at either mechanic or electrical tech any suggestions on what to choose?

This is exactly what I did, got my carto degree. Worked as a carto for 10 years and got as far as I was gunna get. Got retrenched and thought, what the fuk am I gunna do now, went and did 1 year full time at Subi TAFE to get my diploma in structural engineering and have never looked back.. I'm now a lead designer earning much more than I ever did or could as a Carto, and I enjoy the work so much more to.

My 2C

Cheers

Don't forget Occ Health & Safety!!! A mixture of both!

The fact is some people here have been involved with it on a day to day basis for some time, others are trying to make a quick buck by jumping on the band wagon. Those tradies with recognizable skills will be and almost always are highly sought after, if not there is still work to be had for them. They just won't be able to name their price anymore because there is more competition. You can pick the professionals by the quotes they give. The ones who say it will take the longest and cost the most are the professionals. The number of cowboys out there who thought/think they are onto a good thing are gonna crash back down to earth so fast it'll give them rectal bleeding.

In all honesty, either is fine as far as availability of work in the future goes. Mechanics/fitters/HD fitters/electricians are always required somewhere for something.
