Talking about Vista issues, can someone help me with the issue my wife's laptop is having.
It randomly brings up a screen saying "USB debug'blah blah blah, and then gives a 30 second countdown before the computer restarts. The computer shop we bought it from says that windows needs to be reloaded and want's to charge us $90 to do it. I would have thought if it's an issue like that then warranty should cover it? I don't much about computers, am I wrong to think it would be a warrantable problem?

Superantispyware was the only thing that could fix this thing!
It rooted itself damn good into my comp. It even stopped all my USB ports working for a bit, no mouse and keyboard, or external HDD. Big thanks to ross. If anyone sees this thing start to attack jump on it asap. It started off as a google tweak, then started playing with my firewall and it played with ross' email. They're some warning signs...

Thread Hijack:
I just bought more ram for my laptop, it previously had 1gb. Its running vista home basic and i bought 2 x 2gb sticks and it wouldn't run it, just kept getn blue error screen and it restarts itself. Is this like the XP service pack issue setting a max of 2gb? Or is vista just set to only take 2gb?? What's the fix? Josh

the ram could be faulty or your laptop can only take a max of 2gb. vista 32bit can support up to ~3.5gb, where as the 64bit version supports up to 128gb. this wouldn't cause the blue screen though. i would just try each stick separately to see if they both work, if they do then i would think your laptop does not support 4gb ram.
if you turn automatic restart off by going to system -> advance -> error reporting , you can see what the blue screen is actually telling you. |

32bit version of Vista can only see around 3GB from the 4GB available.
You may have a faulty RAM module in there causing the Blue Screen. Try only leaving 1 module in at a time and loading into windows. If 1 module causes a Blue screen and the other doesnt then you may have a faulty module. You could also try downloading Memtest86. This can be booted from a CD and will check every bit of RAM in your laptop for any errors. |

Hey kids... I'm usually pretty good at fixing issues with PC's but a friend of mine has given me a laptop running Vista Basic that I just can't fix...
Getting the following Error when it logs into windows.. won't even get to the user login screen. Cannot start in safe mode, has no back up's and can't roll back to a previous version as there IS none... need an easy fix for it if possible... let me know your thoughts as I have already spent about 4 hours on this and I don't want to spend forever.
