just an update for everyone, the new iphone 3.1.3 firmware has just been released. no jailbreaks for the 3GS yet hopefully soon

Changes in 3.1.3

* improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
* resolves issue where 3rd party apps would not launch in some instances
* fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard

I'm trying to install 3.1.2 firmware on a 3GS that is currently running 3.1 using the "Shift + Restore / Update" method but I get an error message in iTunes that says "your device is not eligible for the requested build." This is apparently part of a new anti-jailbreaking campaign meaning that only the latest firmware versions can be installed on Apple devices.

Does anyone have any idea how to bypass this? I don't want 3.1.3 as you cannot jailbreak it, yet I'm having some issues with 3.1 that I want to get rid of.

hmm, have u set the hosts file entry on your computer?

Is this in terms of iTunes having internet access? Nope, haven't touched it..

I had the same error message on my laptop and I haven't had any issues with any prior updates.

3.1.2 is no longer signed.

Unless you did the cydia 'protect my phone' crap, you are stuck.

Although I haven't been involved in it for a little while...

3.1.3 is a waste of time for anyone considering it. Just fixes your battery percentage as some phones were showing that up incorrectly in 3.1.2.

I have a hunch that with iPad will come new firmware, which is why Dev team et al are all quiet on a 3.1.3 jailbreak.

I thought that may be the case.

I'm having issues with battery life: It died on me the other day at 4pm after being fully charged at 9am with less than 1 hour of use (rest was standby). I can actually watch the percentage go down while I'm surfing the web!

I wanted to charge it up fully and restore the phone to reset the battery software. Looks like I can't restore to 3.1 or 3.1.2 but there are so many threads about terrible battery life on 3.1.3 (ie: 3 hours of standby kills the battery) so I'm not keen on upgrading to that. They release flawed software but won't let you restore to the older software - knobs.

I can tell ya now i have two iphones and both on 3.1.3 and they will last coulpe days on standby, even with using them a bit, my work iphone i sometimes dont charge it for 3 days..

i had major troubles updating n then jailbreaking my 3g to 3.1.2. ended up giving it to a mate who eventually fixed it using quickpwn on mac.
