Longer working hours = higher running costs for shops (labour, power etc...)
Higher running costs = higher prices.

Do you actually have any more money to spend ? Do you want the price to go up ?
If nobody has any more money to spend, then where is the extra money to pay
for employees for more hours going to come from ? Simple, prices go up.

I for one only have x dollars of money per week to spend at the shops. If the shop
is open longer that doesn't give me any more money to spend. So how does the
shop keep pulling a profit to stay open all those extra hours if nobody out there
has any "extra" money to spend to support it ?

Another way to think about it...
If you're a shop owner and have to put on an extra 3 staff to cover the 24hours
then how do you pay their wages ? Out of your pocket ? I think not, the prices
go up to support the overheads of keeping the shop open. Simple accounting.

Flame suit on.

1. The largest cost would be the rent or purchase of the property for a shop to operate. I would prefer my business to operate 24/7 to maximise this, rather than only have it operating for 22% of the week (38 hours).

2. If we are to compete globally, things like penalty rates are a load of crap. If someone chooses to work on a Sunday, why is that suddenly worth twice the pay? (I'm not talking about working 'overtime' here, but rather shift workers). A business could then hire a lot more people, creating more employment. For instance, all of this Gorgon 'boom' work that is being shipped straight overseas since we 'can't' do it, could then be done economically here, with all the additional flow on work this creates for the community.

Tasmania ffs can manage to have extended shopping hours with no ill effects, yet a place like Perth can't?

Some businesses in shoping centres use tradespeople (such as two of mine) and staff tell you to fcuk off when you mention working Sundays and late nights - I cant even open at xmas when the extended hours are in.

Plus - I have to pay double time. This means that if we are at maximum productivity I cover wages and maybe rent on that day. My net after insurances and other costs means it is likely I made no money myself - hardly a reason to piss of my staff and open and force them to work, nor risk it being a quiet day and making a loss.

If those people here who voted cRudd are complaiining well I did have workplace agreements that allowed me to not pay double time just $8 more an hour which made it worthwhile opening for me but now they are gone we just dont open.

If there are no penalty rates on those extended hours then I dont care as much.

Penalty rates should be binned, load of carp. Flat rate but should take into account penalty rates. If you are normally on $20 an hour with penalties, pump it upto $22.50 flat, or something. Its much better that way i think so the people who choose to work sundays and late nights have dont get any extra. I have been on flat rates for the last year at least now, and doing work at all sorts of hours on site, or around uni, and it doesnt bother me.

Perth needs to move out of the dark ages and extend trading hours, at least weeknights or sundays, even both?

Great comments and all from both points of view.

Why don't we trial it for 3months/year for 3 years and then reject it too?

The entire world just about does it except WA business's make it work everywhere else.

You tell me places like JB hifi and Harvery normans wouldn't be packed if they were open on a sunday lol

anybody been to city west harvey Norman on a sunday cant hardly move in there.
