COUNTERPOINT Quote: WA Today Sports Editor Tim Clarke says ... Another day, another reason for sporting fans of WA to look to the heavens and ask: Does anyone give a toss about us? Posturing, grandstanding, claims and counterclaims – the bottom line is, the tens of thousands of fans who love to battle the traffic, sit on the hill at Barbagallo with their cold cans and warm pies and watch the V8s go round and round have been left bereft. And another reason for WA locals, not just sports fans, to be proud of our state is lost. Something else that we used to be able to point at and say, we can do that, and we can do it bloody well, is gone. Rally of Australia: gone. Danny Green: no thanks. New sports stadium: too-hard basket. And what is left. The Busselton ironman, the Red Bull Air Race and the cricket – with even that threatened because some idiot can't hold his booze. While the state government can distance themselves from the latest loss of a major event in WA, they are not entirely blameless – far from it in fact. The day when the notoriously fiery bosses of the V8 competition finally carried out their threats to can the Perth event has been coming. Sports minister Terry Waldron, and John Kobelke before him, and Bob Kucera before him should have all been intimately entwined in the negotiations with the WA Sporting Car Club. To say it is commercial so we cannot get involved is not good enough. The feeling from the Supercars has been that we shell out to come here, at least you can do is appreciate us. They have been asking for years for Barbagallo's pit lane to be sorted out, and only at the last minute did sports minister Terry Waldron come through – with a tenth of what was asked for. As genuine and passionate about sport as Mr Waldron is in public, his voice is not being heard in cabinet. Sport, a major part of this state's free time, is being marginalised. And so what is there left to be proud of. The wildflowers in Kings Park? Cottesloe Beach. The Kimberley? Of course, they are beautiful parts of WA – but we are here because of them, not the other way round. Being the economic powerhouse of the nation? True, but we are also the state that can boast overseeing one of the nation's worst oil disasters in the past six months. The Skyworks - $250,000 for 30 minutes of bang and sparkle and smoke. What a joke. It is time the men and women of this state being paid for their imaginations started using them, to come up with events the residents of WA can be proud of, that we want to see, and that other states and countries want to be a part of. Not just meaningless showpieces that are only valued for how much return we get for the dollars we put in.

I have no idea where Perth is going. Take that arena thats getting built, ugliest structure that looks so out of place to its surrondings.

add that it will be millions over the original budget & no doubt way longer to finish than originally planned for.
Worlds best practices don't seem to come from WA very often unfortunately.

Very disappointed with the under development of WA's racing scene, pretty sad when the NT has a better racetrack than us. We are not only 3 hrs behind on this one but a good 10 years.

Much as I enjoyed the two V8 events I have been to at Barbs I was most pissed at the Trakdayz day I was going to do in December being canceled due to track repairs after the V8's.
It is a good thing to have them but when it impacts others usage of the facility for a month after then well stuff em and good riddance. The "Kings of Wanneroo" bike event was way better entertainment value and should be promoted much more than it was.
