As I've stated previously, I agree that Plain St is not a very good test site. I almost got pinged by a Multanova that was just over the crest of a hill not too long ago (100m detection by the V1) so we can't expect any better from the more directional LIDAR signal. It's still a real setup so if they do position these cameras in a way that reduces detection (hills, bends etc), we may be in trouble.

I am also very worried by the detection (or lack of) when approaching the Poliscan from the rear.

I still think that we need proper tests where the operators are not messing around with the unit. I've been past two Poliscans and both times there were 4 or 5 operators standing around it, messing with cables, covers, lenses etc and detection range was inconsistent.

As I said to Andrew today, speed cameras are not (supposed) to be set up on inclines or bends. How many times do we see that "law" thrown out the window?

**edit 4th June**

Was in the city yesterday and I thought I'd drive past the Plain street site. Wow, what a prick of a trap that one would be! Coming towards the camera, the laser is pretty much shooting over your head as you come up the hill, until you crest at which time your almost in the kill zone.

There would be no detector that could do any better than the reports listed here unfortunately.

There was no camera there when I went past, but then driving back along canning highway, bingo!

I made a few runs in both directions, although I only had a V1 and a TMG in the car. The TMG failed to alert until the last time, in which it alerted pretty much as I entered the kill zone.

The V1 though, did quite well approaching the camera, considering the camera was set up around a bend, but coming back the other way it did not alert until after I had passed the camera each time (also it was the rear arrow every time)

Based on these observations, I concluded that unless you have your V1 mounted up high, with a clear view out the back windscreen you're not going to get any alerts from rear facing Poliscans, and even when you do, it's not going to be in advance. There is just no advanced alert from the front laser "antenna" as you approach a rear set up.

Sadly what I expected is being confirmed. We will have no advanced notice on reverse set-ups.

Jeremy with my reverse passes at Plain Street, I had my V1 mounted low and still got reverse warnings albeit as late as yours seemed to be.

Yea matey, hate to say it, but I fear you are correct in that advanced warnings on rear set ups don't exist. You're relying on spotting the camera on the other side of the road before you pass it. If they place it in front of a brick wall or something......

The last test I hope to do is find one that is (rear set up) on the same side of the road. This means we should be able to pick it up coming on the other side, but will be interesting to see if there's any advanced warning on reverse set ups but same side of road.

hey guys
just curious if its true that if/when our radar detector (v1) picks up the laser signal, does it mean that its too late? and that the camera already has your speed and even if you slow down as you pass it, it will still take a photo of you and have recorded your speed from before you slowed down??

or is it like the old mutlinovas which only records your speed as you pass it

thanks

The distance at which it measures / photographs you is 40m and below
Some laser scatter has been detected up to 300m
