Finished school. Boring
Tried Uni. Boring
Tried TAFE. Boring
Started working full time as property manager, think it was because it was the complete opposite of what anyone expected me to do & was a fun job (aside from the shit). Tripled my pay after 3 years & got tired of it after 5.
Decided to buy my own business & naturally love cars but would never be a mechanic otherwise I wouldn't enjoy working in my own car, never want to work in a car yard. Detailing got my fix of cars & kept that satisfaction of restoring/enhancing cars. Loving nearly every day except for the massive pay cut.

If you want to get an understanding of what you're really up for with your Miss Mechanic job, go out and work with someone. Do it for FREE if you want. In fact definitely do it for free; no-one's going to say 'buzz off' when the hot girl who likes getting her hands dirty and is working there for free accidentally drops the wrench. You wouldn't fire her, would you Doug??

You'll get real-world experience and I've gotta say that my later-high school work experience at various print houses/design firms really helped me understand what I was getting in to (an average-paying, high-stress industry ). But that work experience did wonders!

Karina.. this is how I look at it.

Use your current job to gain as many skills and as much experience as possible. Stay there for a minimum of 1 year... 3 is best.

Treat your CV like building blocks.. you want to show progression in each job so you can use it to get a better one. IMO that is by far the most responsible way to do things.

Mine goes like this.

1) Worked in a call centre for Telstra in Sales... (aquisition and retention)..
Skills obtained: Sales/Customer Services. 1.5 years
2) Used this experience to get a Sales Executive job for a freight company in New Zealand..
Skills obtained: Sales/Time management/people management (had sales support people reporting to me) had a company car/phone rah rah.. 3 years
3) Applied for an international Transfer to Australia.. moved into an area manager/tradelane manager specialty job.. ran a wholesale export service.. continued with sales and also learnt opperations/marketing etc etc.. 2 years.
4) Used these new skills to apply for a sales managers job:
Double the Pay... three people reporting to me.. more responsibility.. rate negotiations with carriers, marketing, overseas travel rah rah rah. (current job).
5) Will then use those skills to apply for the General managers position in another 2 years.

See what i mean.

Remember also the that if you chop and change jobs all the time it will not look good on your CV. It shows you are not a stable employee and will only be working for you for a year and then move on.

If you are looking to completely change what you are doing, find work in an industry and/or company you want to be in.

Find where you want to be working and do anything you can to get in then work you way up into the role you really want. If you are where you want to be, you will have that 'can do' attitude employers love and you can then start talking about 'career progression'.

I wanted to be semi retired and earn good money.
So I went into mining 11yrs ago.
Started off as a shit kicker (mill rat) and worked my way through departments over long term jobs (not this one site for 2months, then another for 6months crap)
Learnt the ropes and rules of each department and put my hand up for any of the free courses they offered (high risk tickets, cert iv TAA, cert iv FLM)
Now work a week on week off roster, earning more money than I have at any other mine site and I'm home every week for a week to spend with my mrs and kids.
I could go elsewhere to earn even more, but time with my family is more important to me than a huge house and flash cars.
