I got to do my check flight in a Starduster Aerobatic Biplane - oh so stoked!

Yes & Yes (I have a non-current restricted PPL) Russ.

The flight I took was a check flight to demonstrate to the instructor my skills (and what I've forgotten) from my original training.

I started flying when I was 16 at Jandakot in 152's, I ran out of cash at 20. So now I have to refresh everything pretty much from scratch to be re-endorsed.

But the rules have changed, now you can an do an 'RA' (Recreational Aviator) license which is less complex compared to a Private pilot's lic.

Jabiru's, piper Cubs, RV6, Glassair and the Starduster are examples of aircraft that have been re-allocated to 'RA' - Light sport aircraft regulations.

This also means no expensive medical, cheaper exams, cheaper instructed flight rates ($170 P/hr in a Jabiru).

There are limitations however - You cannot fly in controlled airspace, VFR flying only (day time - with a minimum visibility) and 2 seat maximum.
