There's a lot of Cowboys out there John 'and no I am not pointing any fingers at anyone specifically', there are also a lot of businesses out there that don't invest in education/training/development or just want to pump out large numbers of returns for minimal overhead.

Personally due to the changes in the Tax Agent Services Act I'd expect to see a reduction in refunds overall.

What was the cause for change? Did the new accountant tell you of things you weren't aware of or are you in some not so legal tax minimisation pyramid woodchipping scheme?
in my case i was seeing H & R Block who apparently knew all about investment properties and the in's and out's of them..... had been going there for around 3 - 4 years and getting small returns!! changed last year to a new "real" accountant ( recommended to us ) who actually knew what he was doing and got a good return. H & R didnt do a lot of things like never set up a depreciation schedule for the house and a few other bits. the new accountant did a schedule straight up and asked a lot more questions, also being an auditor and a property manager himself he knew what to ask and what he could and couldn't claim. big difference in the details which resulted in decent difference in return.

booked into our accountant next week so we'll see how we go this time round.

I go and see an ex ATO auditer to do my tax, have been since I was recommended by someone here. I would never ever go see H&R Block, or any of those "pump it out in half an hour" tax 'agents'.

places like H & R aren't any cheaper either! i think our new guy is only like $20 more than what H & R charged!

The reason i changed to Wealth Creations is that the owner of the company is a family friend, and i was moaning about having to pay more tax rather than receiving a credit. When he did my tax he asked questions that my previous accountant had never asked, it was just more thorough IMO. Was cheaper too.

My accountant charges me $100-$120 - H&R Block is the same roughly, but it doesn't matter because you claim that back, and then my accountant claims the fuel to get to him as well, etc etc...
