It's funny.. my step brother is trying to get into the mines as we speak but has no idea how.. Would love to help the guy out, but don't know what to say. I've given him details of recruiters etc but it really does seem to be "who you know". :-/

There is a reason cashed up bogans are cashed up bogans.

The mining boom has given the hopeless middle class leverage.

Alot of it is covering their end to ensure they can not be held liable.

The mining act can rape a company harder than a schoolboy left with a priest.

Interesting that Rio will take people without any skills and train them for any task. Yet to meet anyone walk in the door and get that treatment. Everyone I have dealt with has had prior training or worked their way up in the company.

Might send in a CV and ask for the CEO position with training. I could do with a Lamborghini!

I don't know your experience in the industry, but IMO you're looking at this wrong. Minesites are not regular workplaces, they are high pressure and as a result suffer massive personnel turnover. Foremen do not have the luxury of picking and choosing, and they are under intense pressure to 'get the job done'.

The foreman is getting hammered by the client about not meeting production targets when his crews are turning over every 6-9 months. He doesn't give a toss what tickets someone holds, he just knows that there is a truck out on the 'go bay' that needs someone to drive it. A swing's training will make a semi-competant operator and that seat will be filled and he might just make his target.

It's not ideal, but that's just the way it is on many sites, especially the small-mid sized ones.

Bingo - if they could train monkeys, they would buy a Zoo John.

A CEO would need vast experience in managing a multi national

Have a look at this bad boy.

Unless you're in your second last year of your course, or have crazy good grades it could be a little harder to land a job early on in the degree.

Guys you are all missing my point.

Yes you might be lucky and manage to nab a job with no experience and get trained to do it. It will be a very low level job, easy to train or require no certification though. If it was as easy as that, why are there so many thread, websites, news stories and what not on how to get a job in the mines? It is just not as easy as rocking up and saying train me.

As the thread is 'how to get a job in the mining sector', I would be getting as much training prior to applying for a position. Want to be a rigger, scaffolder, crane driver etc etc etc, I would be getting a ticket prior and trying everywhere to get experience (local and fifo). The reason I say that, is this is something I look for when employing these people.

This is just my opinion though and each company will have differing ways they want to hire and train people. I know a lot of people who 'get in the door' by taking a TA job, showing promise and then being trained up. This is also a good way of getting your self into a better position.

As for the above, I have plenty of experience in this field. I don't have any experience applying for FIFO as I don't want to do that, but I do have plenty of experience hiring and firing people for those roles. Just trying to pass on my opinion.
