Have you ever seen anyone doing the 50km/h limit in the burbs? If you ever stumble upon one of these rare creatures the Priusslowus you can redly identify it by it's multicoloured tail of many cars trailing behind it!

At least some in the media see "road safety" for what it really is:

The vehicles speedometer is not calibrated to Australian standards and therefore not admissible. If 2 police offers witness this, it may or may not be correct.

and now everyone is so scared of getting flashed and fined that people spend more time looking out for speed camera's then actually looking whats happening in front and around them.

All too true. If you have to spend all your time checking your speedo to make sure your not going 5-10km's over or looking for cameras in the bushes your gonna miss little Timmy when he runs out onto the road after his ball...

You have a point crawl3r, but I would dare the say the people that drive the most dangerous (ie: seriously high speeds) are the ones that do have the skills. Unfortunately due to human nature everyone even the most skilled arent perfect or are unlucky enough to have a mechanical failure (Senna is regrettably an example). They are likely to pass the tests.

Back when I was taught to drive a good 10 or 11 years ago, the emphasis was on knowing where you car was on the road, where the other cars are on the road, what potential obstructions to traffic flow might make an appearance, etc.

Can't help but agree that the government is slowly conditioning people to be more concerned about their speed and thus spending more time looking down at the instrument cluster, rather than on the road where the attention is really required.
