Default P-Plater insurance tips?

Hey guys,

I've had to be weened of my pretty little $80 a month insurance cover as a secondary learner driver and move onto primary driver insurance as a P-Plater and god damn. I was expecting a lot, but some of these prices feel like robbery.

I've got a couple of quotes:
RAC are the cheapest, but I have been strongly advised against going with them. Do any of you guys have any experience with them?

With them it will be around $230 a month with $22800 value and $1500 excess.
Justcar - $22800 value $280 a month $2000 excess
AAMI - $22800 value $270 a month $2000 excess

That's just going off the top of my head with prices I've been looking at but it's pretty damn close to actual figures. Are there any better insurers out there for P-Platers or is this just as good as it gets?

Thanks for any help!

SGIO guarantee to beat other prices by 10% I believe.

There are a lot of us with Shannons, but to be honest those prices sound pretty normal.

There are also a few with RAC too. Myself and Slap Dash just off my head, possible Nick73 too. Prices seem pretty standard for a P plater. Just remember if the car is modded to include those mods on the insurance policy, you don't want them having any reason for a claim denial.

Also have a look through this thread for people's experience with various insurers. Insurance thread

I checked with RAC again and it's actually $190 a month with $1500 excess (includes the age extra excess), that's really attractive as far as pricing goes.

I might call SGIO and see if they can beat that, their online quote puts me at $338

Your link doesn't work Howl, but I'll look it up. Thanks.

I've been with SGIO and RAC for all my cars.

Around $2k pa for a P Plater sounds about right. What kind of car is it and have you already got it?

I didn't mess with turbo cars until after i was 21 because imo paying 2k for insurance is a joke.

MY08 WRX, don't have it yet but I will tomorrow. I currently drive an MY02 WRX and the quotes for that rape me the same way anyway, just to a slightly lesser extent.

I couldn't bring myself to drive anything but a turbo car now, I love them too much.

SGIO are really good in the sense that they ensure your vehicle for the agreed/market value - no worry of mods, as long as the car is road 'worthy' you are covered. They don't ask nor care. Although, the "beat by 10%" rule has changed and is now that they will beat a competitors renewal quote... Which is fucking stupid, I was already with SGIO as they beat the best quote I got by 10%, then the renewal came out and the premium was $700 more than last year. I got better quotes from other insurers for far far less and the answer was we don't match that. So I told them to stick it and went else where.

If you're keeping the car stock than RAC aren't bad, if you do power adding mods or spend a lot on your car they'll be quick to give you the "sorry, please go elsewhere" wrap.

Useage is another factor, I ended up going with Youi who wanted $2800 a year for my STI swapped '98 Impreza as a daily but $1300 a year as a weekender only. All mods covered, they know about the swap. Seemed reasonable.
