One of the big differences between car manufacturers in Australia Vs those in other countries is the ownership. All Aussie car makes are owned offshore. Therefore all profits leave the country. We have continued to subsidise the automakers to maintain jobs on the premise that these workers return the money via taxation. The net effect is a system to syphon funds offshore.

(I'm not sure if they asked the government for money but if they did the following applies to them also)
Why should our tax be going to a company that can't stand on its own two feet? You would think Holden would have said, "Oh look $200 mil, lets use this to find ways to make our production cheaper" Instead of just running like normal, hoping that the market would get better. + The fees that Holden would have been getting from GM (not sure if correct but i have 0 doubts) would have taken all the profit away. That's just how companies work. I have worked for companies before that were owned outside of Australia. They took ALL of our profit in fees so we looked broke (less tax?) For an Australian Auto company to be successful it has to be fully Australian owned, and make some actual good cars. (^ could be 100% with all of this) |

One thing I did like, the Global President of Toyota made the announcement. In my mind it just shows it's a big deal for them and not something they took lightly
