ok so im still chipping away learning what i can here and their. Have ditched the GTI idea as i want to go turbo AWD. So im tossing between a wrx or lancer gsr. Im struggling to find any real info on the GSR in regards to reliability compared to the wrx of the same era. Can anyone chime in? I realized parts are harder to come by for the GSR aswell.

Classic gc8 much cheaper platform than early gsr or evo plenty more gc8 than gsr around and a bounty of rally parts . I had an early gsr and cost my a bundle to get close to an evo in handling and still was no where near the performance .Was a fun car but if you are leaning towards a gsr id scratch that idea and look at an evo 4 at least more parts availible and a much better car. Personally for rally on a budget go the wrx .

Another option that is budget wise and plenty full of parts a gt Forester little bit heavier but something different can pick them up nice and cheap as well

Yeh looked into the forri but scratched that idea. Bit to big and bulky for my liking. Agreed that the gc8 has more accessible spares/consumables and shells though. Would you say the gsr was an all round tougher car to break?

Gsr was stronger but was very underpowered until I changed turbo cams and engine management then same problem as gc8 gearboxes let go .Went through a couple unlike wrx 5 speeds that usually do second gear input shafts or drive shafts the gsr box didnt like hard launches in first .I ended up doing an evo 3 motor and box in it before I sold it which made it a different car. Much better but I got out of it and into subarus and nissans due to price and availability of parts . Gsr was alot more chuckable handing wise but finding an early one in good nick is really hard these days.

If budget is still your number 1 priority, you can stop considering the gsr / evo...

Solid gc8 rally prepped car can be had for $12,000 - $20,000...
Speaking from experience, fuck the learning curve from building it...
Learn when you bust it & need to fix it...

rallyschool yesterday in the hills. i may be a subie owner and love my car, but as a bunky rally toy id be aiming at an early evo tony. evo2-4 ish.. the subies sadly had way more plowing understeer than the evos in the dirt and the older ones are lighter, cheaper, and just as much fun. subies had the better power deliverly with more control but the evos on song and killier sharp turn were a lot easier to drive and less of a wrestle. ill prob be in the market for one myself soon! got the itch!
