try and find second hand autronics it would be cheaper than new, i brought my smc plug n play off a member for $1000 then install and tune would be around $500-$700. i did look at vilpec ecu but this option was cheaper and autronic ecu has better software, faster tuning, few different options rotational, anti lag, launch control.

Nah, I'm just a whore............. Ask yourself what you NEED for a street car. You don't need: Anti lag Launch control Rotational idle UNLESS you are building a monster HP engine / track car. I'm a big fan of Power Fc's for Gc8's, they retain all the factory ecu's functions (a/c idle up, power steering load idle up etc) but add a wide range of tune-ability. They have a hand controller to monitor temperature, boost, knock etc live, without the need for a laptop or $$$ proprietary dashboard. They are easy to install (plug & play) & a tune is about $400-500. Stock wrx with an exhaust & 1.2 bar will make about 190 -210 hp atw on a safe tune. You can find them popping up for under $1k used.

Equivalent year STi computer = best bang for buck.
I did a 98 recently, fitted 440's, 90mm AFM, STi version ECU, VF34 and a 3" exhaust. Driveability was superb, AFR's were safe, no ping, went like f**k! |

Yeah Joe, the car was an Aussie 98, so no local STi version available. I swapped the wiring over to suit a JDM ECU.
Ross, I reckon $200 - $300 for a STI computer, but I think AUS versions have an inbuilt immobilizer that makes them difficult if not impossible to use in a different car. The reason I wanted to try using the stock STi computer is that V3/4 STi's go so damn well from factory. I pulled a 12.7 @ 102 out of a $5000 bunky with only a catback exhaust. They start hot or cold better than 99% of PFC equipped cars, no flatspots, no blackened rear bumper, no dyno time etc. |

of course, forgot we didn't get sti for 98
that's pretty good. it is tuned for a higher ron but the tune probably gave it plenty of margin to run the lower oz ron damn, i actually sold a few old STi ECus for $100 and some at $50 |
