Default Video camera, editing software etc

After viewing JME's MVC collection over the past week or so, i feel that i should be documenting more aspects of my life throught various forms of media. I possess nothing more than a point and shoot camera and have no image processing/media programs (other than the basics) on my computers at home.

I never take my camera anywhere and I'm not huge on taking photos, videos or anything of that nature, just take a look at my build thread, not a single pic of the new motor on there Hopefully, thats all going to change soon.

For my motorsport exploits (when the car's finished that is) ill be buying a HD GO pro, so that has that side of things covered, but i want to know whats the latest and greatest in the world of video camera's, I'm after an all rounder, something fairly compact, with HD capabilities and still shot function, decent zoom and thats about it. Price is not really an issue, but i dont want to go overboard.

also, what programs are good for editing, movie making and all that sort of stuff. I'm sort of in the market for a PC and or laptop. I was considering one of the new Macs, especially as it will be used primarily as a media PC and they are far superior in that area compared to the other options available.

Howdy.

I was in the same position as you a couple of months ago, looking for programs to edit movies on my pc and the best program people said to use is a new Mac. Lol.
I bought a 27" i5 mac. imovie has an excellent editing program that is very easy to use.
It comes standard with the mac and has so many different effects for titles, cutting between scenes, music editing, fade in/out etc etc.
This is my first mac so im still getting used to the change from pc, but its pretty easy.

As for photo editing, iphoto is a great program for basic adjustments like cropping, bright/dark, saturation, contrast etc, but im looking for Photoshop cs4 to do the things iphoto cant do, layering, filling etc. My pc has photoshop cs3 and its a wonderful program to do any adjustments.

Hope this helps a bit mate.
If you can, have a play with the new mac first and see what you think.
Good luck buddy.

If you go a PC...
Windows Movie Maker is pretty good. Its not the best program out there, but ive found it pretty easy to use (and Free!).

One of the best would probably be Adobe Premier.

be careful with some of the cameras from JVC and panasonic.
They record MOD files and they are a bugger to work with with generic software.
You can do basic stuff with the software provided, but I have only been able to find one software pack(the name escapes me now) at officeworks that can edit MOD files.

Older camera footage was easily edited using movie maker.

Speak to Fobz Chad.

Sony Vegas editing suite is pretty mint, it what Ian uses for all the cruise vids.

I've got it too (I'm a noob at video editing), here's my first attempts at using it:

http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...=74rossco&aq=f

all except the first & last vid in the list are done with Vegas Pro & shot with a cheap samsung compact point & shoot camera.

Vegas has truck loads of features & I've only scratched the surface.

My bro has a JVC and it records in .MOD files but all you need to do is convert them with iSkysoft Video Converter into any other format.

Im sure the "savvy" people could find where to get the program on the net.

I'm dragging up an extremely old thread here, but V3's original question is fairly similar to my own and so it seemed better than creating a new thread.

Basically, earlier this year I spent some time diving an underwater forest and was pretty amazed by it, so in January myself and the rest of my team are going to go back with our GoPro's to film it. We've filmed a bit of video so far, but don't really know SFA about editing, and the footage is just gathering electronic dust. In regards to this, has much changed since the OP, or is there something better out now? FYI; using a PC.

Cheers, Alex.

What format would you save the video in so that you can put it on a disc and watch it through your home DVD player onto your TV? Is there a editing suite I can use to add chapters to the DVD also?

I am in the middle of saving my old digital 8 tapes onto my PC using Windows Movie Maker and eventually want to transfer them onto DVD as mentioned above. I also want to do the same with my gopro stuff.

Thanks
