But I had a close look and pretty much any method you choose to stop the belt from rubbing against the problem area would work...

Its got nothing to do with the end links. Its not tension in the bar that is making it hard. It literally won't fit... as in the bushings look too big and the U shaped clamp literally cannot fit over...
