This is on an MX-5 and uses the standard pull mechanism.
You don't need an extra spring as there is one in the door...

Also for future reference when removing parts off a Japanese car the screws aren't Phillips head they are JIS.

Using a flat bladed screwdriver tilted at 42.5° should do the trick though.
