Default Windows 7 Install Problems... Lil help?

Hey all, I'm more than aware that there are a few gurus around here, so I could use a bit of help. I have gotten my hands on Win7 and am in the mood for upgrading from XP, but with the 32bit disc, it keeps telling me I can't install because I'm not running NTFS on any of my partitions. As it's XP, I'm using the custom install as opposed to the Vista Upgrade, but I've followed all the instructions (I know right...), and still keep getting to that point and get stuck. This is on my laptop, whether or not that information helps, but either way... lil help please.

Alex

You will need to format a partition to NTFS. FAT is old and boring.

Formatting will lose all your data so backup first!

Ahh, marvellous, does it matter which of the partitions I format? And by lose everything are we talking just files/documents/porn etc...? As I've already got all of this important stuff on an external HD.

EDIT: And another thing... How do I do this conversion you speak of...?

AFAIK Windows 7 can't use FAT32 formatted disks as the boot disc, regardles of whether you're trying to instal win7 32 or 64 bit.

You'll need to back everything up and format your drive(s) (or at least the boot disk) to NTFS for Win7 to work.

You are better off doing a fresh install anyway...It ensures no errors are migrated across form the old operating system/ file structure to the new O/S.

I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 and it was painless, even though I'm running striped raid drives & Nvidia graphics cards in 3 way SLI.

HTH

Beaten by thiiiiiiiis much!

That's the plan, just can't figure out how to format the drives to NTFS. Because I'm going from XP, it's not quite as simple as what Vista looks.

If you have more than 1 HDD, back up all your data to that drive. Reboot your pc and boot Windows7 from CD drive. Thats where the option to format is Then format your non backup HDD to NTFS.

I don't get any of these options on the bottom of the window though. Only refresh and load driver. God I hate feeling like a chump.

Finally got it work, I'm ever so proud of my efforts. Thanks to all that helped out. On a sidenote, for some reason I managed to install it twice, so I'm running two OS, both 7. Am I better off just leaving it there, but removing it from the boot menu, or actually trying to delete it?
