Can only use equal force here from my understanding, could probably get away with hitting them with a pat or similar by using the excuse that they entered your house, you feared for you/your families saftey and did not know what if any wepons they had.
Think if you chopped them you would get done.

Get in the habit of having your car/house keys next to your bed at night. These bastards would need some seriously big balls to come into your bedroom in the middle of the night.
I also stock a fully loaded Easton baseball bat under the bed.

I think if someone is on your property you should be able to use anything you want to stop them from potentially attacking you. As I mentioned, there are some really easy answers to "why do you have this 1-1/2" diameter 2 foot long pipe at your house". - Only way to find out if I have one of them too, is try and break in

Dans dog - little West Highland Terrier is exactly the same... living in Maylands .. theres always interesting people walking past (like the dude yesterday who stopped to ask us how to get to 9th ave coz he wanted to go to 'Pollies House' haha with his bible in one hand! looper!)

dog will take notice of white people.. but wont go too spaz unless they snooping around... but if natives are walking up the street.. he goes NUTS until they well past the house .. smart little fucker !

I totally agree on the dog + alarm combo... 2 dogs even better... 1 small dog and 1 big one.. small one wakes the big lazy one up .. big one barks and sounds scarier and makes the would-be burglars fark right off. Aunty lives in middle of nowhere in Malawi, Africa... works a treat. (well it did till one of the rotties decided to chomp the poodle in half on xmas day last year )
