Yep, this "fog" lights thing has been a perpetual issue ever since cars started sporting them from factory. Bottom line is, only legal to use them in "fog"; whether or not that extends to "smoke", "dust" or other vision distance limiting situations is open to interpretation.

Dunno about later models but the GC8 foggies are rated at 55W..... the same as the low beam headlight, and lower to the ground with the same direction of aim, so go figure. They are nowhere near as blinding as similar halogen jobs on later model commies etc.

Tis a very, very old debate.

My personal opinion is they don't hurt/ blind anyone, so in this case I think police could find more resourceful things to do then enforce such heavy penalties for misuse of factory installed equipment.

It's something we should really take back to the manufacturer as a complaint. They have some responsibility for encouraging owners to use the device if they install it as standard equipment for Aus cars and state how to use it in the handbook etc.

PS- I have removed mine years ago as they make great brake ducts! My opinion still stands though.

The guy you got was probably the same cop that told me:

'there's absolutely nothing wrong with your car, but I'm going to have to give you a Yellow for your BOV'.

Why are BOV's not allowed?

'because it gives people asleep the shits'.

FYI: BOV was Full Atmo, and at that point in time I'ed only had the car for a month or so and was p.oblivious to what laws applied. It was just a fluke that my 'device that gives people the shits whilst asleep', was actually non-compliant.

Flame suit prep'ed and ready for take off.
What the fuck are you complaining about, your BOV was illegal !!!!! It wasn't a fluke it was obvious, atmo BOV's have been illegal for years.

facepalm, you're implying that the police officer pointed out that fact. He stated to me that the illegality arose from it giving people asleep the shits.

I knew after the fact that it was full atmo and I'm not debating that. I stated that he gave me a yellow sticker based on the BOV period'and used the 1month old tyres as the second rationale', for excuse to give me a yellow.

Jesus christ mate, hows about you read and interpret what I have posted before you start preaching the gospel according to fail!

+1

This is my first wrx and i never knew about such fog lamp rules in Australia.
All car manufacturers should take the responsibility in telling us about the rules before selling us the car.

Lucky for me, the cop only gave me a warning instead of dishing out the $250 fine and 3 demerits.

hahaha the CAI idea sounds like a good one.

Ok thanx everyone for ur comments

Taken from WA Drive safe manual
and you should have read this to get your drivers lic
Quote:
3.3.3 Driving in fog or smoke
It is difficult to see clearly when driving in fog or smoke. Don’t put your lights on high beam as this only lights up the fog or smoke and makes the road more difficult to see.
In fog or smoke you should:
dip your headlights so you can see more easily;
drive slowly;
not follow closely behind another vehicle; and
use your fog lights if you have them.
Do not use fog lights incorrectly. It is illegal. If your vehicle is fitted with fog lights (either on the front or rear) you must only have them on in fog or other hazardous weather conditions that reduce visibility and not have front fog lamps and headlights on at the same time.
basically you are only allowed to run two forward facing lights in built up areas at any time, same rule applys to spot/driving lights.
If you drive into fog bad enough that normal headlights create a blinding white sheet in front of you, you should turn fog lights on and headlights off allowing you to continue at a reasonable speed.

using your logic , Subaru is also responsible if you get caught doing 160km/h?
