I've always wondered...for light track work, say once a month AHG skid pan/ Tuning arvo/ No Limits Nights at Barbs...do you guys think a std WRX with intake/exhaust/tune/front rotors/pads/coils will be sufficient? I mean, at what point does an STI become necessary?

Anyway to answer your qu dude, i'd go the 05 STI....but i agree, there aren't many good examples out there....

Only reason against getting the MY11 wrx is the 5 speed box. I have an MY10 which cost me a shitload in extra petrol on a recent trip down south as any fuel saving from the less-thirsty newer engine is negated by the 5 speed running at over 3,000rpm in top gear. Why the fuck it has a 5 speed I don't know as the new golf polo shitbox has a 7 speed?

You need Brembo's for No Limits, I certainly wouldn't push to hard or have faith without them, even with a good pad and rotor combo, although a few do but that's just my opinion. For all the rest a WRX will be fine but don't expect to compete with an STi of the same model.

You don't need brembos!

It comes down to pad/rotor combo, no the manufacturer of the caliper.

A Brembo is just a type of 4 pot. Put a shitty pad in there and it won't stop as good as the standard wrx 4 pots with good pads/discs.

I'm with Kato on this one. A mildly modded wrx is more than capable enough for occasional track work. The weak link (in the short term at least) is definitely going to be the driver. Although it's nice to have, an STi (and all the goodies they come with) is far from a necessity as a fun weekender.

If 07+ GT-B was on the list, I'd have chosen it for sure.

Number of gears isn't the issue, it's the gear ratio that is.

I can get you an 8 speed gearbox that revs at 4000rpm at 100kmh if you want.

I'm suprised they haven't whacked in an extra tall 5th gear to help with the highway mileage though. 1-4 can be short to keep the car on the power, but 5th should be the cruise gear imo.

I was talking more to the point of the coverage that Brembo's give over the standard calliper of the WRX hence more stopping power and heat dispersant. Hence an extra left nut when it comes to pulling up hard.
