Dont stretch your budget if you have a baby on the way...

Would you want auto or manual with the mrs and baby in mind?

Your best bet would be either an MY06 WRX Hatch for $20-$24k or a MY06 Forrester for $22-$26k.

Drive them both and work out which one you would rather drive. They both are different in driving positions etc. Also check for visability out the back of both when reversing.

Heard bad things about the 08 when I was looking a while ago.

Is the 08 worth it over the 06/7?
May have a baby on the way ? hehe work that one out first for the budget :P

For a family car, I'd go a forester, liberty, 08+ hatch in that order.

We have an 09 hatch and it fits me, the mrs, bub, pram and a big bag full of gear very comfortably.

Got a MY06 sedan. Bub was born 9th March. You might want to check baby seat fitment first. Ours fits, however the front passanger will have their ankle around their ears...... (not for kinky reasons either) whilst the baby is in newborn rear facing position. Seat is NOT meant to touch the baby seat therefore it is close to its most forward setting to avoid this.

Having the seat this far forward sux cos the I have to move forward to look around the passenger for traffic at T junctions.

Plus, its an bit of a bitch to get bub out without without leaning into the car excessively, hard to do in car parks without bashing car next to you. I now appreciate Parents with Prams parking !! I get by ok as I can reach in fairly easily being tall. The Mrs who is 5ft nothing finds it more difficult.

It will be fine once the seat is changed to forward facing.

Another thing worth looking at....what pram are you looking to fit in the boot.

We ended up chosing the pram based on which fit best in the boot - Baby Jogger City Select. However you wont have much room when shopping for anything.

My advice for what its worth, go the Forester.

We have a 4mth old and bought the wife a 2010 Impreza sedan with the plan being to use my Lib over the weekend's and just have the new car for her to run around with the bub during the week.
The bub, and the mrs for that matter, have not even thought about stepping into the Lib since the baby was born! Hence me now not having any second thoughts about selling it!..

The Impreza is mint, fits the baby seat in the back no problem although the boot space does get fairly minimal with a big pram... The hatch would be better in this regard IMO...

Either way, I think you make do with the space that you have! Buy the car that you want rather than worrying too much about what will be best to fit things into(within reason of course)..

buy adam's (runforest) forester, such a nice package, has everything you'd want to mod already done, goes and handles like a wrx but way less po-po attention and a bit of extra room in the cargo area over a wrx hatch

my mrs rocks around in a liberty sedan for daily duties, more than enough room for 2 kids and all thier stuff + shopping bags

I dont think a modified car would be the best option with a baby... I would think safety would be higher priority. Massive acceleration, bumpy ride + baby =

I drive an 08 and have absolutely no issues with the car... The 09 has a better turbo and a couple of small improvements, so if you can pick up an 09 for a good price do it. :-)
