It depends on what you want from the car I guess. I went from MR2 Turbo to an 03 WRX. They were similar power/weight, the grip of the WRX was amazing and it was very easy to drive quickly and it was very capable, quieter, more refined. But in comparison to the MR2 it wasn't as involving to drive and was boring to drive.

You'll find the grip and drive out of corners will leave a joker-esque grin on your face. In terms of power nowhere near a downgrade, get an STi if you can stretch, seriously worth it for the Brembo's and the robust 6speed gearbox to name a few.

That said, a wrx is still amazing to drive and will still beat the pants off most other street cars.

cut to the chase & buy an sti otherwise you'll find you'll spend more time upgrading to sti parts

things the sti has that the wrx doesn't:

stronger 6 speed gearbox (peanut models onwards have dccd - meaning you can control the amount of drive between front & rear wheels)
stronger R180 rear diff
brembo brakes front & rear
better suspension (bigger swaybars, better struts, stiffer springs)
nicer interior (dash cluster, blue and black seats)
bigger turbo standard
ej207engine block (handles more boost than stock wrx)

all these mods soon add up to bulk $$$ when you're purchaing them separate, by the time most people have spent $10-15k upgrading thier wrx to these specs you may aswel have splashed out the extra $5-10k in the initial purchase price to buy the sti

Not at all.

Sure rip a limiter launch and get a few car lenghts which equals a better 0-100 time, but say from 60kmh, stock for stock, an 03 wrx isnt exactly omg let me rub one out right now this is orgasmic territory, and would quite likely get taken by a VY SS.

Interesting.
I have never driven an 03 wrx. Are they particularly slow?
I regularly drive a VZ SS, and a VZ clubby, and have lined up against them both when my 99 was stock. The wrx would beat them to the posted speed limit in all cases.
I conclude that "in terms of acceleration" (which is what my point is quoting), the wrx is faster than an SS.

You are completely entitled to feel otherwise.

How much time does one spending launching off lights though? Or down at the drags.

In real world use, having tons of torque through the rev range is a great thing.

I know that doesnt fit in the with the perth-wrx perception that nothing better exists than a wrx with hellatones and mudflaps, but you know what I mean... and I know you are smart enough to know it.

Quoting this for the pure fact that it is hilarious!

Yes a RWD family sized sedan with lots of torques through the whole rev range is awesome. Yes a smaller lighter AWD turbo car is awesome also and lightning quick off the mark.

Depending on the application either could be better than the other....

Personally I prefer the second one hence why I have owned one for 5 years.

Go test drive one and make your own mind up, you are on Perth WRX, everyone is going to say to buy a WRX.

Go on Perth Commodore and see what their answer will be......

Or go get the 60-100 or 80-120 times for the 03 WRX and a VZ SS or SV8.

Then realise what a stupid and pointless argument this is.

TJ buying WRX = they are the greatest.
TJ selling WRX = every other car pwns them.

^^ This has proven history on this forum too!

As everyone has said, completely different cars. I went from a VP commodore, to a 03 WRX and now into a Hilux.

Commodore was a great cruiser (VY obviously is streaks ahead of the VP). Plenty of power, nice noise, did skids etc. WRX was pretty awesome in comparison. Was more involving to drive, miles ahead in handling and pretty quick. Build quality was also heaps better but servicing and parts were more expensive and I didnt know enough about the car to do much myself. Hilux is slow and awesome.

You'll have a lot of fun with the WRX, especially if you can get to some RAC/track days etc. You'll probably end up missing the skids and ease of cruising in the VY but that's the compromise you're going to have to make.
