i have a similar problem to this,i have a 99 rex and the CEL comes up occasionly and only when going up hills, rms has told me the oxygen sensor on exhaust is fuked and is whats causing this, would it be worth forking out the few hundred to replace it or should i just pull it out all together? i also get the jumpy starts on a cold engine. and ebay has shown no sensors for cars before 2003 =(

What CEL code is it firstly? This will give you some sense of a lead-in. And good work for bumping a relevant thread. Many dont.

A dead O2 won't throw a code on a 99 gc8 (unless it is unplugged), unlike the GD onwards cars, it's only there to trim the cruise afr's and not check the cat. efficiency.

If it's dead your economy suffers & nothing else.

There is 'a code' relating to 'something' that the ECU is throwing the CEL on for.

But I learn something new every day. GD > GC.

Timboon, get the code read. And we'll take it from there. And if you dont want to fork out money for the new sensor 'on a whim', see if you can source a second hander, to trial, and see if it is the problem.

Brent.

That's why I want to know what ecu is in the car because the stock GC doesn't log any code except O2 heater short to ground.

When the sensor dies it just doesn't output any voltage to the ecu.

I wonder if it has an ecu and it's pinging (powerFC spec)?

Hence the cel when climbing hills.

If that's the case there's nothing logged or able to be read after the event.
