by timing marks- dont ask, do you mean they were out from previous build? cos i've read that ej's do suffer from belts slipping a tooth every now and then. upgraded cam gears and belts are available and recommended

Yes, I understand this, and hence not kicking up a major stink. It's very possible that the belt slipped.
However, less likely, is the intake pipe ending up like below:

You can see where they have cut the pipe to fit it over the turbo, and then gone "fuck it, know one will know"... and just pushed it up against the turbo.
I'm in a habit of checking all work done on my car... but I never thought i'd have to check the intake was clamped on to my turbo correctly.

Just be careful about saying it was cut, these do split easily after they have been on and off a few times.

Once they have had a bit of blowby and been munted (they are a prick to fit at times) they significantly weaken and the lower part of the lip folds in.

When the lower part folds the only way to get it on is a 90deg hook which can easily leave enough of a nick in the pipe inside to cause a split once you get significant positive pressure in the tract a couple of times.

If I was building a serious motor I'd fit a new stock one or a (much better) silicone job. Think of it in terms of, would you re-use your used radiator hoses, thermostat and timing belt.

The last time I had my engine out was just to "get it running" again, apart from ARP studs, I didn't do any strengthning or modifying. So i can understand them re-using my intake pipe... I would have appreciated a hose clamp on it tho...

This time round I'm replacing everything... including adding a silicone intake.

In regards to my car being in good hands at cypher, I totally agree. I've been going there for the last 3 years and dont have a bad thing to say about them, I just wish I had been a little more patient and got my heads done there last year, rather than going elsewhere because Zac and Gav were so busy...
