A smooth tune will cost more as there's a fair bit more time involved in getting the best cold start / cruise (economy) / off boost driveability out of it and ending up with an engine package with good manners when it's not being belted.

Don't skimp on the dyno time, you'll kick yourself if it's a pig in stop start traffic.

Well worth the extra $$ imho.

The stock ones aren't known to fail under normal or even hard use.

There is an STI optional timing belt that is the factory part the rally cars used but it's $$$$.

Subaru is pretty sure of their timing belts durability if they reason a 100,000 km change interval is the norm.

Budget to change the Idler bearings, tensioner bearing, waterpump (t/belt driven) and the cam seals whilst your in there with the front half stripped.

the sti kevlar belt is a little overpriced. the cosworth/tomei/gates ones are not a bad option for the money.

vf29 on a jdm version vi? pretty sure they all came with the 28 standard.

Angry

What does a subaru timing belt go for. My gates one cost me 230 clams. Serves me right for not doing my research. That was the only thing i didn't quiz anyone about when i bought it. No excuses for that shit, just plain stupid. Might flog it off and get a Subaru one. GREAT!

the Jap vi is VF29, v jdm was vf28.
All Aus v & vi were vf28.

The 29 is just an updated 28 anyway (compressor wheel design updated).

Vf29 is a ball bearing turbo with a 467 comp wheel and P18 Turbine Housing.

What the, What the, What the.. More shit to worry about.. CRAP! This thing will never hit the road. Just when I think i'm getting closer someone tells me i need another 3 things. HAHA I suppose this is what I got to expect. Appreciate the advice anyways, I want to do it properly and not have trouble soon after putting the engine in.

aus spec are/is a JDM STi correct.

jdm is sti, sti ra, sti ra v-limited and 201 correct.

so where does the 29 fit in if all of the above came fitted with the 28?

Right you lot - pin your ears back

STi limited editions from 1994 quite often have Subaru brand forged pistons fitted. This may be where the " option " tag has come from, but it may also be that they originally had forged, but have had a rebuild at sometime/ somewhere and the wrong pistons were fitted then. It is a bit too far back in time to be definite about that.

Sti vers 2 RA has the Subaru produced forged pistons fitted as standard MOST Vers 2 RA have have Closed deck block [ let's not go there for the minute ]

Then all STI and STi RA up to Vers 7 [ Bug eye ] have Subaru Forged pistons as standard.

Blob eye & Hawkeye [ & EJ257 ] have hyperEutectic [ usually spelt bullsh*t ] pistons fitted - which are an extremely good product for a manufacturer to use - but totally crap for any sort of performance engine.

The Subaru forged type look similar to a cast piston in shape and design and do not at all look like the billet types that you get from: Cosworth, Omega, Mahle CP, Ross, Wiseco, Wossner, Jun [ cosworth] et al.

Cleared that up then ?
