Drop in a 6 speed?
My WRX 5 Speed is feeling a touch notchy. Particularly when in first at 5500 or so and then try to push it into second(reasonably calmly, not flat shifting or anything) Otherwise it's fine. Not sure if my clutch could be the issue or not?
Would putting a brand new meaty clutch in fix this up? Or do you think it would more like be the synchro's getting worn? I know the clutch is probably worn down a fair bit as it's the original with 150km on it, but it's not slipping at all, but does shudder every so often, so not sure if a new meaty clutch would get rid of it? Just didn't want to spend $800 or so on a new clutch install to find the issue is still the same, to which that $800 could have gone into a 6 speed with a 6 speed clutch and such. What kind of cost am I looking at for a 6 speed conversion, - don't really need a complete R180 upgrade, just the box, shifter, in cabin bits etc. The price of a second hand 6 speed is seemingly more than a brand new 207 with a few bits to go with it as well which is also a difficult choice The box as far as i know has had a reasonably easy life, no drags, brutal launches, just 200kw. What yas think.

Changed the oil? Try some Motul Comp FF or something similar.
Also, hows your gearbox mounts? If they're soft, you'll have a bit more trouble shifting, especially when pushing it (engine loads up then unloads, twists the box on its mounts, and makes it harder to get into gear). |

As for 6 speed cost, you need at a minimum:
- 6 speed box - Auto front stub axles, unless your 6 speed is non DCCD from 02 and earlier, which means your shafts will drop straight in without having to change the stub axles - Clutch fork - Gearbox mount - Tailshaft - Shifter - 3.9 rear CWP in your stock R160 You can use the 5 speed clutch and flywheel and starter motor so thats no problem. I'd budget $5k ish supplied and installed.. thats assuming you pay between $3500 and $4000 for the box with most of the above parts supplied, plus install, oil and CWP supplied and installed. You can probably do it cheaper if you source the box from Import Monster yourself, but I'd personally save the trouble, spend the few hundred extra and buy one thats already here.. at least you can inspect it. Try the Classifieds for the bits you need, and hit up Doug @ STechnic for the install. |

Pedal feels alright - Will look into gearbox mounts and such as well. If it turns out to be the box then I will be a man and go the 6 speed.
Good to know I can keep the 5 speed clutch as well, So i'll put a new one of those in too and see what it feels like then.

This is a good buy
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/sale/38446-dccd-6-speed-gearbox.html Make sure to put a plated rear LSD in if you go for a DCCD box. Its also a damn good idea even if you go non DCCD. Anything less will make baby jebus cry. Otherwise if you just want to fix all your notchy gear shifting. I would recommend: Group N transmission mount and engine mounts. Kartboy shifter bushes in the uni joint, front bush and linkage rear mount. And change the oil. The Motul oil like Joe said is good shit. My preference is still the Redline lightweight shockproof. But you MUST drain your gearbox thoroughly. I'd let it drain at least over night. If your car is not a daily driver... let it drain for a fugging week. Redline does not like mixing with the remnants of the old oil.

Group N mounts are definitely a good thing.. my 6 speed mount is so soft, that I can feel the gearbox jiggling around over bumps.. and on a hard 1-2 change, the box doesn't like it very much.

Thanks fellas, that's some good info to work with. When the car is up on a hoist I'll have the mounts looked at as i suspect something is amiss there. I can hear something creaking under the car when going up kerbs on an angle and such.

Could be - stock swaybars. I wonder how much rougly i could flog the old 5 speed off for if i layed down the coin on a 6 speed setup. I can afford a 6 speed setup .. just wondering if i should man up and commit to it.
