you shouldn't need to jack the motor up on an impreza.

it is generally only foresters, (which have apacers between the crossmember and the chassis rails), that require jacking the motor up.

replace all seals (gaskets, spark plug surround and bolt seals) use genuine parts,

make sure everything is clean,

and then make sure it is clean again.

I recommend that a small amount of sealant (permatex ultra grey or threebond) be applied only in the corners of the gasket where it goes up and over the front cam caps on both inlet and exhaust cams.

I have big hands to man, but it can be done,as type 25 said using a little bit of gray sealer for the half moons at the back of the head is a good idea

Well, What a day!

The STi now has complete set of New Rocker cover seals :-D

First up, Massive thanks to Spektre & kamimages - Could not have done it today with your help :-D

Ok, the whole job itself took all day - we werent rushing to get it done and i wanted to make sure it was done properly once.

I ended up using ALL genuine subaru parts for the job.
Final parts list looked a little like this:

2x Rocker Cover Gaskets
4x Spark Plug Gaskets
4x Spark Plugs
16x Bolt Gaskets
1x Blue Permatex gasket sealer.
5L x 5w 30 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Oil
1x Subaru Oil Filter
1x Sump Plug Washer
4x Degreaser
Shit Loads Of Rags :-D

The Job: The job itself was not as hard as i thought it would be. My hands have some nice little nicks and cuts from jamming my hands in to get the bolts undone/done up.

It was apparent at some point the driver side had been changed at some point - there was shitloads of gasket sealer around the rocker cover edges - but we ensured before we reinstalled the covers that all the edges/machined surfaces were clean of debris etc.

I found on the inside of the rocker covers that right near the breather hoses ( i think thats what they were) was signs of some burnt oil and the oil inside the head smelt a little burnt and shit.

The covers came up brilliantly after some degreaser and elbow grease was applied.

The job itself was a really good one. I couldn't recommend enough having a set of ratchet spanners for this, the 10mm spanner literally did almost all of the work today.
Also the old plugs i pulled out were really really black.

The car is now running smooth as silk - ive never heard it so good - the excess oil (read: shitload) is burning off the manifold and covers, that should clear in a day or two.

All up, not an easy job, a bit fiddly but there was no rush and I/We learnt a buttload about how to do things like this.

Sorry, i didnt get any pics after all this.
