Forester GT at standard level
Default engine swap EJ205

well my 98 forester GT 5sp manual engine finally blew the head gasket and is now pressurizing real bad

my engine code is EJ205NWZKE which is the factory 2L turbo

i have found a engine which is a code EJ205NW4BB

so my questions are
would it be a straight swap?
would i need to remap my ecu? - if it can be done
or
just swap the ecu or run just run the original ecu?

also the new engine has the coils at the plugs as mine has the coil pack

thanks in advance to any advice

Why don't you just take the manifold, wiring harness and parts off your engine abd then put it on the new engine?
I think the crank pulley may be different, eg, more teeth, so best to check that, but the long engine itself will be ok

Trust me, sell and buy something newer. I only say this from prior experience. I'm sure there is some one else who will back this up...Cat???

you can't run a wrx motor with a forester ecu & vice versa without a retune, it will work but the tunes won't match as they have different cam profiles/timing, motor will prematurely ping itself to death

unless its a jdm forestrer motor going into a wrx as jdm foz got the wrx engine

ok swapped the engines over but car wont start

engine check light comes on when cranking

worked out crank gear is different to the forester - thankyou johnvk7 for your post

replaced with original but still wont start - check engine light now has gone out

when cranking engine would like to start but feels like the timing is out

good spark and strong fuel delivery from the filter

please any ideas would be great
new engine is running all previous sensors

both engines were running prior to removal

i even put some fuel down the manifold but no fire up

very confident all electrical plugs and leads have been refitted
