will thicker oil help with burning oil/smoke? i always thaught itd help with gasket leaks/seals dripping after a run but does it burn different? isnt a fucked turbo seal or crook piston rings gonna burn oil regardless of its grade by seeping in once its at running temps? just keep it full and your fingers crossed on such a weathered donk!

Smoke is black, ended up putting the same 10w40 in again. What causes black smoke? Does that mean it's burning oil or fuel?

Fuel I think. Oil is blue/white smoke isn't it?

Thicker oil will reduce oil burning. My mate has a old CE lancer, engine makes rattling noise, so I put Shell HX7 10W50 and it does reduced oil consumption by half, no more noise. But I cant guarantee it will work on turbo cars, turbo core may not like thick oil that much.
Repco staff recon Pentrite fully synthetic and Shell is good, Castrol not so much, too much detergent not enough lub in it. But at the end of the day, only used oil analysis can tell the true story. I think excessive fuel is black, oil is blue, coolant is white. Maybe check ur PCV as well?

Definitely black smoke, so must be running rich. Is it worth running a fuel system cleaner through to clean injectors and fpr?

Can't see that making much difference, though it won't cause any damage. Black smoke is definitely excess fuel which fine, just means its running a bit rich. Which is a lot better than lean.
re-tune?

Get a known functional maf sensor and test fit it first, if its restricted fueling system, it should run lean, not rich, right?

Dead O2 sensor will cause this too.

Cheers Ross, Should there be a code coming up if the 02 Sensor is stuffed? Don't really wanna go overboard changing out parts unnecessarily because as soon as I can find a suitable Forester for the wife, this is gone and I'll be tootling around in her old Cruze!!

No, the ecu will only throw a code is the O2 sensor heater circuit fails.
The sensor tip can clog with carbon deposits which prevents the sensor 'seeing' any of the gas flow so it reads lean all the time regardless of actual AFR.
