Standard WRX (No mods), street driven only - Motul Turbolight 4100 10w40 will be fine, although I would still put either Mobil Syn S 10w40 or Elf Competition GT 10w40 if you have a GC8 EJ205/207 WRX/STI for big end bearing protection.

Modded WRX/STI - Track / MC's / Hard Street driven - Motul Chrono 300v 10w40, Competition 15w50 or Elf Comp GT 10w40, Excellium GP 10w50

Well known engine builders, especially over East have found the ratings on the Motul Turbolight no quite correct.
ie the Turbolight 10w40 is like other oils 5w30.
On a Hard Street driven car with ocassional track work the viscosity of the Turbolight oil is too thin for big end bearing protection.

On a side note: Crankshafts and Big End Bearing Protection.

The MY02+ STi cranks have 4 oil holes on the mains of the crank, Subaru know they have a problem with big end bearing lubrication in EJ20 engines. Smart engine builders both here in OZ and the States have modified the oil phasing in the pins of the crank that have seemingly fixed the big end bearing protection problems.

Also note that MY03 OZ WRX's onwards use the same crank as the MY02+ STI's.

:)
Are Subaru dealerships the only place to stock Subaru oil filters?
Ryco Z436 is same size as genuine supplied by dealers. ( and cheaper )

http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalogue/product/make/subaru/model/Impreza/part/Z436

Ryco Z495 fits WRX 10/00 - 07/03 and is a bigger filter

http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalogue/product/make/subaru/model/Impreza/part/Z495

May fit later models as well ( not sure ) Im useing the Z495 because of the larger filtering area available.

^^ stock subaru oil filters.

not ryco ones of similar spec.
I am guessing someone is half way through running in a new engine? say after about 5000km??
Nah Morgan, found out the EJ207 is already run in. Built by Phil Lowe out of Melbourne with the oil crank mods, better rods/bolts and some other stuff for a very good price.

So I went with the Motul Chrono 300v 10w40 :)

Thanks guys, appreciate your help.

Who stocks Motul 300V in descent quantities? - After more than the standard 5 litres.

Whats it worth?

maccar86 21-10-2007 05:29 PM

sorry for the newb question.
obviously if u can change oil there is a dipstick to check how much you have left right? where is the gearbox one in an 01?

thanks

BALISTC 21-10-2007 05:34 PM

Gearbox dipstick is behind your turbo, to the right of the dump pipe.

Not sure where to get it in bulk, but 4L is like $90odd bucks.
