Interest rates when the Reserve Bank Board meet on November 6th are expected to to 8.57% The core problem with Australian Government at the moment is the Liberals control both Houses of Parliament. Since Howard has gained majority control in the Senate he has pushed through some very unfair conservative policies. Witness Workchoices as an example, the most Un-Australian tome of legislation seen in recent memory. Howards mantra - "You are free to do as we tell you!" I've voted Liberal in the past, but the Australian idiom of a Fair Go seems lost in Howards never ending draconian macro-economic reform!!

1982 was not a year that it was a problem for me
But in 1982 also, consumer spending was not was it is today. And the fact that there are much more jobs that have been made available for the public in this decade than previous, that the total household incomes are becoming higher and more manageable. The problem lies where duel income households (where as back a decade or so ago..were not as prominent so a 21% interest rate would be more heart felt) are not able to plan ahead. Under the howard government, the interest rates have been lower than previous governments have they not? That was the 'promise' made at that last election... it has stood has it not? In the end and either way we will all have to live with it. Just make sure that you have enough money to make it work in your household and that with any rate rises (not just home loans. ie: state governement rises in rates) that you can budget accordingly. In regards to the topic, did anyone see how steaming Ray was about his little worm being axed ? LOL

Stolen from the ABC. People also need to look at the 'real' interest rate (taking into account inflation) not just the 'nominal' one mentioned everywhere. Oh interesting fact - look how the interest rates peak around 1991 when Paul Keating took over from Bob Hawke. Definitely not the 7 odd percent that you have mentioned? Also the nice curve from 96 onwards shows that something has been done right.

Paul Keating was in from 91 - 96. The interest rates dropped quite a bit under the keating govt.
